John King with Run-DMC
The founder and owner of Chung King Recording Studios, John King is a music industry icon. With his in-depth understanding of the creative process and the technology behind it, John has developed his New York City studio, Chung King Studios, into one of the most successful and respected audio recording and production facilities in the world.

In 1979, John opened Secret Society Records for under $2,000, before finally changing the name and incoporating into Chung King Studios in 1986. Chung King Studios gained international attention in the 1980’s by spawning the landmark commercial prescence of Rap, and it’s sub-genre, Hip-Hop. This was due in large part to his early work with artists such as the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J and Run DMC.

As a result of the success achieved by these, and other Rap artists who recorded there, Chung King came to be known as the Abbey Road of Rap. It is by no coincidence that these genres, which were far from mainstream at the time, first found the formula for the commercial success at Chung King.

John, who is known for his cultural sensibilities and knack for cultivating relationsips with difficult artists, embraced these fringe artists and provided them with a uniquely constructive and acomodating environment in which to maximize the expression of their talents. These artists in turn embraced Chung King. Similarly, by consistently providing this customized care and attention to all of the artists who have recorded at the studio, he has established Chung King as the recording environment of choice for a number of top-tier artists and producers.

For over 20 years, he has worked and developed relationships with prominent artists in a wide-range of genres. Artists with whom he has worked range from 1999 multi-Grammy winning artist Lauryn Hill to Pavoratti, and include multi-platinum selling Smashing Pumpkins and James Taylor. Under his direction, Chung King has produced records that have sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, generating over $4.5 billion. Accomplisments such as these have led to John receiving RIAA industry awards, a SPARS award for recording excellence and several Mix Magazine Tech Awards nominations for outstanding acoustic design at Chung King Studios.

With an average of 20 requests per week for his artist development and production services, John has frequently had to farm out these artists. However, with the studio’s recent expansion into a $10 million facility, he has the time and resources to accomodate a wide range of established and upcoming artists.
